Dragonfly is a Formula 40 catamaran built in Australia in 1987, designed by Scott Jutson and built by David Renoff. Her previous owners campaigned the boat extensively under the name “Simply the Best”. The boat set numerous records in Australia including: Surf to City Race; Gold Coast to Moreton, where she averaged 23.6 knots and won the 347nm Brisbane to Gladstone Race 4 consecutive times. Amongst these, the boat had a record of 67 consecutive “line honor” finishes.

In 1998 “Simply the Best” was sold to a Hollywood based movie production company for filming a television commercial in Thailand. This was a commercial for a cigarette company in Brazil featuring some very exciting footage of two Formula 40’s flying hulls and playing “chicken” in 15 knots of breeze. Many sailors read about this filming in Multihulls Magazine. The boat’s current livery of dragons was added for the making of this commercial.

The boat was then sold and delivered to Seattle to her current owner, Pat McGarry, in January of 1999. Since that time Pat and crew have had “Quite a Ride” graduating from many years of beach cat and monohull sailing to this exciting Formula 40 catamaran.

Dragonfly’s name was conceived on her maiden sail by Pat’s wife, Carol, stating “ WOW, do these dragons fly”.

The boat has competed in most major sailing events in the northwest and has won many including South Sound Sailing Series, PSSC, Tri-Island Series, Gran Prix, 2001 NW Multihull Championship and most notably winning Swiftsure 2000 and 2001 (Cape Flattery Race) and taking 2 hours off the existing record in 2000 and another hour off the record in 2001. The Cape Flattery record, set by Dragonfly, now stands at 9 hours.

She has twice completed the 580 nautical mile Cadillac Van Isle 360 Race around Vancouver Island. In 2001 she set a new elapse time record of just over 68 hours.

Sailing in the Northwest “Dragonfly’s” knot meter has recorded speeds in excess of 30 knots in non-surfing conditions.

Dragonfly’s talented crew of multihull experts believes that sailing is FUN, especially when done FAST. The crew includes Richard Ackrill, Nick Banks, Sandy Dick, Craig Kistler, Randy Nicholai, Mark Thynes and others. Their expertise makes “Dragonfly” the fastest sailboat currently sailing in the Pacific Northwest.

The boat was little used until 1993 when she was sold to new owners who campaigned the boat extensively under the name "Simply the Best". Winter Vashon Results: Dragonfly Dominates!

Now that I have been nominated as Race Fleet Captain, running unopposed. I feel that it is my duty to report the results of the first race in the Northwest Multihull Cup for 2001 (the actual new millennium).

With the weather reports earlier in the week predicting breezy conditions with rain many of us entered in Winter Vashon were somewhat skeptical about how much fun this was going to be racing on December 2. The weatherman had it all wrong. Sunny 50 degrees and not a drop of rain, with winds at the start at 11 knots from the southeast is perfect racing weather.  Well perhaps a bit more wind would have made the day perfect. We were also treated to rare site in lower Puget Sound, A large pod of Orca whales playing in the wakes of several big ships that passed through the fleet.

Pat McGarry with Dragonfly his formula 40 catamaran finishing the 30.7-mile course in just 4 hours 35 minute and 17 seconds dominated this 8-boat field. I don't know if this is a new record but with the wind averaging 10 knots for the first part of the race it should be kudos Pat. Coral Reefer and Strider had a great race for second and third with Dave Dupree piping Rod Tharp by 1 minute and 53 seconds this is a race that they will both remember and talk about for a long time. The rest of the finishers were racing the clock and a dying wind to hold on for a finish. I would also like to commend Marty and Linda Adams on Cuttlefish who double handed the race and decided to fly only the screacher instead of a kite. They were close enough to me several times that I could see big smiles on their faces. I decided to withdraw from the competition when we ran out of food and the coffee in the thermos got cold. I have other excuses for our poor performance but I am sure you don't want to hear them here.
